German (Resident in Britain) 1734-1810 Johann Zoffany Galleries Painter of portraits, conversation pieces, and theatrical scenes, Zoffany was born in Germany and came to England about 1758 after studying in Italy. He began by painting clock faces and doing hack work, before turning to painting theatrical scenes, especially depicting David Garrick. He was favoured by the royal family. Canadian Expressionist Painter, 1871-1945 Canadian painter and writer. She studied art from 1891 to 1894 at the California School of Design in San Francisco. She lived in England from 1899 to 1904, studying at the Westminster School of Art in 1899, and settled in Vancouver on her return. Her stay in Paris in 1910-11, during which she had a painting shown at the Salon d'Automne in 1911, proved far more influential on her art, familiarizing her with Impressionism, with Post-Impressionism and with Fauvism.
Nuzi, Allegretto
Italian, 1320-1373 .Italian painter. He was probably trained in Fabriano by local masters who introduced him indirectly to Giottesque and Sienese influences. Familiarity with the work of an anonymous artist responsible for the frescoes (Urbino, Pal. Ducale) from S Biagio in Caprile also contributed to his early style. Nuzi's first signed and dated work is a Maest? of 1345, believed to have been painted for S Domenico (formerly S Lucia) in Fabriano. This altarpiece is a close contemporary of two frescoes in the sacristy of the same church, which have been ascribed to his hand following their restoration in the mid-1970s (Donnini, 1975).
COYPEL, Antoine
French Baroque Era Painter, 1661-1722 director of the French Royal Academy and principal painter of Louis XV. He illustrated many literary works, including editions of Moliere's plays, and was himself a prolific dramatist. Coypel wrote one fairy tale, Agla ou Nabotine (Agla or Little One?), published posthumously in 1779. Coypel weaves several traditional fairy tale motifs into the story of a benevolent fairy who tests the kindness and sincerity of an ugly little girl whose virtue is eventually rewarded with beauty and the love of a handsome young man.
